Seeing Clearly: How to Create a Vision That Actually Works for You

Discover how to create a clear, personal vision that inspires action, fits your real life, and guides you toward the future you want.

Let’s be honest…

We’ve all had moments where we’ve set a big, exciting vision for our life, only to watch it fizzle out. Sometimes it’s because life got in the way. Other times, it’s because the vision wasn’t actually ours to begin with.

We picked what we thought we “should” want…
…what looked good on Instagram…
…what everyone else was aiming for.

And then we wondered why it never stuck.

Here’s the thing: a vision that works isn’t about creating a Pinterest-perfect life. It’s about clarity. It’s about your values, your reality, and your next chapter, not someone else’s.

So, if you’ve been craving more direction, let’s talk about how to create a vision that feels so right for you, it naturally pulls you forward.

Why Clarity Matters More Than Motivation

Motivation comes and goes. One day you’re ready to take on the world, the next you just want a nap and a cuppa.

Clarity, though? That’s your anchor.

When you’re clear on what you’re working toward and why it matters, you don’t have to rely on bursts of motivation, you can take small, steady steps in the right direction even when life is busy.

Without clarity, you drift. With clarity, you design.

Step 1: Start With Your ‘Why’

Before you think about what your vision looks like, ask yourself why you want it.

Your “why” is the emotional driver that keeps you going when the excitement wears off.

For example:

  • “I want more energy” might really mean “I want to be able to play with my kids without feeling exhausted.”

  • “I want to grow my business” might actually mean “I want the freedom to choose my hours and be present for school pick-up.”

Get honest with yourself. This is about peeling back the layers until you hit the real reason you care.

Step 2: The 5 Senses Vision Method

This is one of my favourite tools because it brings your vision to life in a way that feels real, not just wishful thinking.

Close your eyes and imagine you’re living your ideal day in your dream life. Now ask yourself:

👀 What do I see?
Your home, surroundings, what you’re wearing, who’s with you.

👂 What do I hear?
Laughter? Music? Quiet? The sound of nature?

💛 What do I feel?
Physically (warm sun, soft blanket) and emotionally (calm, excited, grateful).

👃 What do I smell?
Coffee brewing? Fresh air? A favourite candle?

👅 What do I taste?
Your favourite breakfast? Sea air? That first sip of coffee in the morning?

The more detail you add, the more your brain starts to believe it’s possible and when your brain believes, you start acting in ways that make it real.

Step 3: Keep It Real (and Yours)

Your vision needs to excite you, but it also needs to fit your life.

If your dream right now is a three-month solo trip to Bali but you have three kids under 10, that might not be realistic this year and that’s okay.

You can still build elements of that dream into your life now (more freedom, more adventure, more time for you) while working toward the bigger goal in the future.

And remember, it has to be your dream. Not your partner’s, not your mum’s, not your best friend’s. Yours.

Step 4: Break It Down Into Seasons

A vision works best when it’s broken down into manageable chunks. Think of it in seasons, not all-or-nothing deadlines.

Ask yourself:

  • What can I start working on this month?

  • What’s realistic for the next 90 days?

  • What can wait until next year?

This way, you’re making progress without burning out or feeling like you’ve failed if it all doesn’t happen immediately.

Step 5: Put It Somewhere You’ll See It

Your vision is no good stuck in a journal you never open. Put it somewhere you’ll actually see it and be reminded of it daily.

This could be:

  • A vision board on your wall

  • A written statement stuck to your fridge

  • A digital collage on your phone background

The more you see it, the more you’ll naturally keep it in mind when making choices.

Step 6: Be Willing to Update It

Your vision isn’t set in stone, it’s a living, breathing reflection of who you are right now.

Life changes. You change. Your dreams change.

Revisit your vision regularly and make tweaks as needed. This isn’t “giving up” on your dream, it’s making sure it still fits.

Journaling Prompts for Clarity

If you’re feeling stuck, here are a few prompts to get you moving:

  • In my ideal life, I wake up feeling…

  • The three most important things to me right now are…

  • If I couldn’t fail, I would…

  • In five years, I want to be…

Your Challenge This Month

Set aside 20 minutes this week to create or update your personal vision. Use the 5 Senses Method to make it vivid, then choose one small action you can take to move toward it.

And remember, you don’t have to wait for “someday” to feel good about your life. You can bring elements of your vision into your reality right now.

Final Thought

Creating a vision that works for you isn’t about adding pressure, it’s about giving yourself a guiding star.

It’s about knowing where you’re headed so you can make choices that feel aligned, even in the chaos of everyday life.

And the best part? As you start living that vision, your children will see it too and they’ll learn that dreaming big and taking action isn’t just for other people. It’s for them as well.

So… what’s your vision going to be?
